The Secret to Early Years Learning

Young children don't learn by sitting still. Here's what actually builds the foundations for school, confidence and lifelong learning.

How Young Children Really Learn Best And Why It Matters

The secret to early years learning isn’t what most people think. Every day, we talk to families who feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of information about child development. The questions come thick and fast – what should my child be doing? How do I prepare them for school? Am I doing enough?

Today, we’re cutting through the noise and making it simple.

What the EYFS Really Tells Us

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework underpins early childhood education across the UK and it doesn’t ask children to sit still and follow instructions. It asks them to do three things:

  • Play and explore – get out there and discover the world
  • Learn actively – stay motivated, curious and fully engaged
  • Create and think critically – develop their own ideas and make real connections

These are the Characteristics of Effective Learning, and they drive everything we do at Magical Tots. Because the secret to early years learning has always lived inside these three powerful principles.

Benjamin Franklin put it perfectly:

“Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn.”

That’s exactly why we fill every class with movement, imagination and hands-on experience. Young children don’t just benefit from this way of learning, they are built for it.

What Does the EYFS Actually Cover?

The EYFS curriculum builds strong foundations for life, not just for school. It tackles:

  • Communication and language
  • Physical development
  • Personal and emotional development
  • Literacy and mathematics
  • Understanding the world
  • Expressive arts and design

Through dance and the performing arts, we actively support every single one of these areas and we do it in a way that feels joyful, exciting and completely natural for young children.

How Do You Really Prepare Your Child for School?

This is the question we hear more than any other and the answer will surprise most people.

Forget the worksheets. Stop worrying about sitting at a table practising letters.

What children actually need is:

  • Confidence – to back themselves and their abilities
  • Independence – to take ownership and do things for themselves
  • Listening and attention – to engage, focus and absorb
  • Coordination and physical strength – to feel capable and comfortable in their own body
  • Creativity and self-expression – to think freely, imagine boldly and communicate openly

Children who arrive at school with these foundations don’t just cope, they thrive. They bring with them a genuine love of learning that no worksheet could ever create.

Movement Is the Secret to Early Years Learning

At Magical Tots, we design every class around your child’s whole development. We don’t just teach dance, we build confidence, ignite imagination and lay the groundwork for a lifetime of joyful, curious learning.

Young children are not built to sit still. They grow, connect and thrive through movement, exploration and full involvement and that is the environment we create every single week, without exception. We feel so strongly about this that we are actively conducting a survey to present directly to our local MP and Parliament, championing arts-led, active education for every child.

Movement isn’t just good for the body. It is the beating heart of how young children learn.
